Sondheim's ambitious work on modern Japan's opening to the world is now going to be presented as a co-production between Japan and the UK.
After running in Tokyo/Osaka in spring 2023, it is then intended to transfer to the Menier Chocolate Factory in London, with performance dates and cast to be announced at a later date.

This project is the first co-production between the Menier Chocolate Factory and Japan’s Umeda Arts Theater. Menier Chocolate Factory is one of the most influential theatres in London, known for producing bold, highly artistic works. Umeda Arts Theater is one of the most prestigious theatre companies in Japan.
The work chosen for this first collaboration is the legendary Stephen Sondheimʼs ambitious musical Pacific Overtures. The collaboration of Japanese and Western creators will lead the process of reimagining this one-of-a-kind work, which is essentially a story of Japan told through the eyes of Western artists.
The production in Japan will feature new direction by Top Hatʼ s Matthew White and a top-tier creative team along with a highly acclaimed cast consisting of Japanʼ s leading actors.
Together, they will bring you a new perspective on Pacific Overtures.

ストーリーストーリー

Set at the end of the Edo-period on the small island of Japan, the story unfolds around Commodore Perryʼ s arrival
from America on a gunboat. The isolationist government gets panicked and sends two men to the American ship to
lead the negotiation to stop them from landing ‒ the two men being Kayama Yasaemon, a lower-class samurai of
Uraga, and John Manjiro who was captured for the crime of leaving the country. Although they once avert the crisis,
Japan eventually ends up with a flood of Western admirals coming to force them to open trade. Under the watch of
the Reciter, Japan inevitably heads toward the tumultuous era of opening itself to the rest of the world.

Message from Matthew White

“Pacific Overtures” is a Sondheim show which to me feels like a rare jewel. Sometimes overlooked in the UK - perhaps because it concerns a period of Japanese history with which most British people are fairly unfamiliar - there is, however, always a palpable excitement when a production of this remarkable show is announced. Stephen Sondheimʼ s recent death has caused us all to re-evaluate his extraordinarily rich legacy. Every one of his shows feels uniquely different from the last, but for the audiences who were lucky enough to see the first production of “Pacific Overtures” on Broadway in 1976, the overwhelming feeling must have been one of astonishment. Here was a musical unlike anything American audiences had seen before, with a style of presentation which incorporated Kabuki and Noh traditions, and which was performed by an all-male cast up until the very last moments of the show. In this ground-breaking piece of musical theatre, Sondheim and Weidman managed to present Eastern and Western traditions in thrilling juxtaposition. I am extremely honoured and excited to be involved in this new production of “Pacific Overtures,” a collaboration between the Menier Chocolate Factory in London and Umeda Arts Theater in Japan. At a time when my own country, through Brexit, has opted to isolate itself from its European neighbours, I find it both fascinating and enlightening to investigate a period in recent history when Japan came to the opposite conclusion - that the only sensible option was to engage with the rest of the world, to embrace new technologies, and to demonstrate that anything the West could do, Japan could do better…
